Packaging recyclability assessment guide

How to assess the exact complete pack rather than relying on a resin name or a generic recyclable symbol.

Recyclability is a system outcome. The pack must be recognised within the relevant material category, collected through an available route, sorted into a usable stream, and reprocessed into material that replaces virgin input in a realistic application. The assessment therefore needs the exact body, closure, label, adhesive, liner, valve, colour, dimensions and product residue—not only the main material.

Use the current reporting-year method

PackUK and Defra publish the UK extended producer responsibility guidance collection, including the recyclability assessment methodology and the material-specific documents to use for each reporting year. Guidance and thresholds can change, so record the version and date used rather than treating an old result as permanent.

Create a complete-pack component map

  • Main body: polymer, fibre, metal or glass grade, colour, weight and dimensions.
  • Closure: cap, lid, liner, tamper band, valve, spring, dip tube, gasket or overcap.
  • Decoration: label face stock, adhesive, ink, varnish, sleeve, coating or direct print.
  • Flexible features: sealant, barrier layer, zipper, spout, cap and tear feature.
  • Residue and preparation: emptying, rinsing, separation or other realistic user action.

Design changes that need reassessment

A change that appears minor in purchasing records can alter the result: a darker colour, full-body sleeve, different adhesive, metallised layer, carbon-black pigment, smaller format, attached pump or a barrier coating. Keep the approved pack specification linked to the assessment, and trigger a review when any assessed component changes.

Technical recyclability versus disposal wording

The consumer instruction must match the collection route and any realistic preparation step. Do not instruct users to separate components unless separation is practical and supported by the assessment. A component may be technically recoverable in a specialist stream while the complete consumer pack is not accepted through ordinary collection; the wording should make that boundary clear.

Recyclability review checklist

  1. Photograph and identify the complete empty pack.
  2. Record component materials and weights.
  3. Classify the pack using the current official method.
  4. Test any required separation step on representative samples.
  5. Document the rating, assumptions, method version and evidence source.
  6. Align artwork and disposal instructions with the approved result.
  7. Set an owner and review trigger for material, supplier and guidance changes.
