Packaging label and recycling compatibility guide
Select labels that apply reliably, remain legible in use and are assessed with the bottle, pouch or container they decorate.
A label is a functional packaging component. It must adhere to the pack, carry required information, withstand the product and distribution environment, and interact appropriately with the intended recycling route. Face stock alone does not determine the result; adhesive, coverage, ink, varnish, liner and application conditions also matter.
Build the label specification

Application performance
Test the actual container surface and condition. Surface energy, curvature, mould release, condensation, cold filling, chemical splash, oil, powder and abrasion can affect adhesion. Record label application temperature, dwell before testing and the storage conditions under which peel, edge lift or tunnelling is assessed.
Recycling interaction
Review the label with the complete pack and the current assessment method. Large-area sleeves or labels can affect recognition; adhesives and face stocks can affect separation and reprocessing. A label marketed for recycling compatibility still needs evidence for the exact container material, adhesive and process conditions.
Labelling-line inputs
- Label width, length, pitch and backing-web width.
- Core diameter, roll outside diameter and winding direction.
- Container dimensions, label panel and orientation feature.
- Required application speed and inspection method.
- Surface condition at application and any condensation.
- Date coding, batch coding or overprinting requirement.
Artwork and change control
Keep the approved artwork, die line, material construction and roll specification under version control. A change in varnish, laminate, adhesive, coverage or liner can affect both line behaviour and end-of-life evidence even when the printed design looks unchanged.
Approve the roll on the intended applicator
Use production-representative rolls to check unwind direction, web tracking, gap sensing, peel plate release, container presentation and label placement. Run enough labels to include roll joints, normal speed variation and a restart after a stop. Record wrinkles, bubbles, flagging, liner breaks, missed labels and code readability. Retain the approved roll specification and labelled samples so that a later material or converter change can be assessed against the same acceptance criteria.
