Mono-material packaging specification guide

How to define the declared material scope and test whether a simplified structure still protects the product and runs reliably.

“Mono-material” should describe a defined scope, not only the visible body. For a pouch that means checking the print web, barrier, sealant, coatings, adhesive, zipper, valve or spout. For a bottle system it means deciding whether the statement covers only the bottle body or the body, closure, liner and label together. The approved wording must match that scope.

Do not trade away product protection

A simplified structure may have a different barrier window, stiffness, heat resistance or puncture behaviour. Define the product’s sensitivity, intended shelf life, fill temperature, headspace, storage and distribution conditions before comparing candidates. Where barrier is reduced, use an appropriate shelf-life study rather than assuming that a material label predicts product performance.

Sealing and line behaviour

For flexible packs, record sealing-jaw type, dwell, pressure, temperature, seal width and contamination risk. A material can form a good laboratory seal but behave differently at production speed or with product in the seal area. For rigid packs, check neck, cap, liner, induction seal or tamper feature as a complete closure system.

Evidence wording

Ask the supplier to state the construction and the exact basis on which “mono-material” is used. If a small non-target component is permitted under a specific assessment method, the wording should not imply literal single-material construction unless that is true. Keep the declaration linked to the approved pack version.

Approval sequence

  1. Confirm the complete construction and declared scope.
  2. Review product-contact and barrier documentation for the exact application.
  3. Run bench seals, closure or compatibility checks.
  4. Run a representative production trial across normal settings.
  5. Assess filled-pack storage, handling and distribution.
  6. Review the complete pack against the current end-of-life method.
  7. Approve artwork wording and change-control triggers.
Is a predominantly single-polymer pack automatically mono-material?

Not necessarily. The declared terminology should follow the exact construction and the relevant assessment method. Layers, coatings, adhesives and fitments must be included in the review.

Can a mono-material pouch replace every laminate?

No. Product barrier, seal, heat resistance, puncture and shelf-life requirements differ. Suitability has to be proven for the exact product and process.

Does mono-material mean the complete pack will be recycled?

No. Collection, sorting, dimensions, colour, residue and reprocessing infrastructure still determine the practical outcome.
