Sustainable packaging buyer’s guide for UK manufacturers
A practical framework for comparing packaging options without treating one material, format or environmental claim as automatically best.
A useful sustainable-packaging decision begins with the job the pack must perform. It must contain and protect the product, survive filling and distribution, provide the required dispensing and information, and reach an end-of-life route that exists in the intended market. An option that reduces one impact but increases leakage, product loss, breakage, rejected packs or transport damage can move the burden rather than reduce it.

Compare function before marketing language
Record the current pack’s accepted performance and known failure modes. Include product sensitivity, fill temperature, required barrier, closure torque or seal, shelf-life target, case configuration, pallet pattern, storage range and distribution route. This functional baseline allows different materials to be compared fairly.
The Competition and Markets Authority’s Green Claims Code guidance explains why broad terms such as “green”, “sustainable” or “eco-friendly” require clear qualification and evidence. Procurement documents should therefore separate the internal objective from the exact external wording that may eventually be approved.
Rigid packaging
Bottle comparisons should include body material, colour, weight, neck finish, closure, liner, label and any sleeve. PET, HDPE, glass and aluminium have different strengths, processing needs and end-of-life routes. The complete system, not the body alone, determines suitability.
Flexible packaging
Pouch performance depends on every layer, coating, print, sealant, zipper, valve or spout. A lighter pack may use less material per unit, but barrier and sealing must still protect the product and prevent failures.
Build a defensible shortlist
- Define product, pack size, market, line and distribution conditions.
- State the environmental objective without turning it into an unverified claim.
- Collect component-level material and weight data.
- Identify documents required for product contact, recycled content or end-of-life wording.
- Shortlist options that meet the functional baseline on paper.
- Run a representative pack, line and distribution trial with acceptance criteria.
- Approve the final specification, evidence wording and change-control owner together.
Questions to resolve before requesting prices
Is paper always a lower-impact replacement for plastic?
No universal conclusion is possible from material name alone. Coatings, barriers, pack weight, product protection, transport and the intended collection route all affect the comparison.
Does a lower pack weight automatically mean a better outcome?
Lower weight can be beneficial when the accepted performance is maintained. The trial should also count leakage, breakage, rejects and product loss.
Can a supplier’s generic certificate support every product in a range?
Only when the document scope clearly covers the exact grade, component, site, process and claim. Record the product reference, issue date and limitations.
When should a packaging assessment be repeated?
Repeat affected checks when the material source, construction, dimensions, colour, closure, label, product, line, market or evidence method changes.
