The comparison should include the complete pack and its evidence, not only the main body material. Is there one packaging material with the lowest environmental impact?

No packaging material is automatically the lowest-impact choice for every product and supply chain. The result depends on the functional unit, pack weight, product protection, production losses, transport, recycled input, reuse system where applicable and realistic end-of-life route.

Define the comparison boundary before using carbon, material or recyclability claims. Figures from different studies or different pack sizes should not be combined as though they describe the same application.

What should be compared when choosing between a bottle, pouch, glass or metal pack?

Compare containment, barrier, dispensing, consumer use, line handling, transport, breakage or puncture risk, decoration, component count and end-of-life evidence. A flexible pouch may use less pack material but require a particular barrier and seal system; a rigid bottle may provide handling stability but need a separate closure and label.

How should product protection be included in the comparison?

Set product-protection acceptance criteria before comparing materials. Container stiffness, base geometry, friction, transparency, dimensional tolerance and static can affect feeding and conveying. Closure and label properties affect capping and application. Flexible structures affect opening, filling and sealing.

Include upstream and downstream equipment in the review, and trial candidate packs at representative settings before committing printed or high-volume stock.

What evidence should support the final packaging choice?

Keep a controlled specification, supplier evidence file and production approval record. The specification should identify every component, material, weight, dimensions, supplier reference and artwork interface. The evidence file should support any regulatory or environmental statement. The approval record should show samples, settings, tests, defects and acceptance criteria.
