Label specification and application

How do you choose label material and adhesive?

A practical guide to label construction, container surface, application conditions, roll format and recycling compatibility.

A label is a system of face stock, adhesive, release liner, ink and finish applied to a specific pack under defined conditions. Selection must account for the container material and shape, surface contamination, temperature, moisture, storage, product exposure, print method and applicator. A label that looks suitable on a hand-applied sample may not run reliably on an automatic line.

How do you choose label face stock and adhesive?

Choose the face stock for print, appearance, durability and conformability, then choose the adhesive for the actual surface and environment. Container material, roughness, curvature, flexibility, surface energy, moisture, temperature and product spill all affect adhesion.

Obtain candidate constructions from the label supplier and test them on production-intent packs rather than relying on a generic “permanent” description.

Why do labels fail on condensation, oily surfaces or flexible packs?

Water, oil or product residue can prevent wet-out, while flexible or squeezable packs can stress the label and adhesive during use. Temperature changes can also create condensation after application. A rigid, dry laboratory sample may therefore hide the real failure mode.

Apply labels under representative conditions and inspect immediately, after dwell, during storage and after normal handling.

Which roll specification does an automatic labeller need?

Provide label width and length, gap, corner radius, web width, liner, core inside diameter, maximum outside diameter, unwind direction and print orientation. Transparent labels or liners may also require a suitable sensor method.

Confirm left- or right-hand presentation and the label-leading edge against the actual applicator before printing the full order.

How do labels affect packaging recyclability?

Label material, coverage, adhesive, ink and the ability to separate or remove the label can affect sorting and reprocessing of the main pack. A recyclable label does not by itself prove that the labelled bottle or pouch is recyclable.

Assess the complete pack using current methodology and ensure disposal instructions match the supported separation step.

What should be included in a label trial?

Test the final container, label construction, artwork, roll format, applicator, product environment and downstream handling. Record web tracking, dispensing, placement, wrinkles, bubbles, edge lift, adhesion over time, code quality and pack appearance.

Retain labelled samples from representative production settings and connect them to the approved supplier and artwork references.
