Household-product packaging selection guide

A controlled selection route for cleaning, maintenance and other household products where formulation and closure compatibility are critical.

Household-product packaging must be reviewed against the exact formulation and use conditions. The container, liner, gasket, trigger, dip tube, label and print may all contact product or vapour. Supplier experience with a broad product category is not a substitute for a compatibility assessment and filled-pack trial.

Information needed before material selection

  • Current safety data sheet and formulation information needed for packaging compatibility.
  • Concentration, pH, solvents, surfactants, fragrances and oxidising or reactive ingredients where relevant.
  • Fill temperature, storage range, shelf-life target and orientation.
  • Consumer dispensing, venting, child-resistant or tamper-evident requirement where applicable.
  • Transport classification and competent regulatory review where required.

Leak and transport testing

Assess normal and inverted storage where relevant, cap or trigger lock, case packing, vibration and temperature exposure. Record product loss, odour, staining, closure movement and pack distortion. Use competent advice for dangerous goods, child-resistant packaging or other regulated requirements; this page is general selection guidance, not a compliance determination.

Production-line controls

Confirm materials of construction for product-contact machine parts, filling nozzle behaviour, foaming, drip control, capping method and label application after any product residue. Provide the intended cleaning method and changeover needs. Packaging and machinery trials should follow site risk assessment and the product’s safety information.

Review stress cracking, permeation and venting

Some formulations can soften, swell or stress-crack a container or closure over time, while volatile components can permeate through a pack or create pressure. Review these mechanisms with the packaging and formulation specialists, then condition filled packs in the orientations and temperatures relevant to storage and transport. Where a vented closure is proposed, define leak, pressure-relief and contamination controls rather than assuming that any vent is interchangeable.

Quotation and trial checklist

  1. Provide the exact product and current SDS through an appropriate confidential route.
  2. Send current pack, target format and closure samples.
  3. Define fill, storage, transport and use conditions.
  4. Agree compatibility, leakage and dispensing acceptance criteria.
  5. Run a controlled line and filled-pack trial.
  6. Release the exact bottle, closure, liner, label and supplier versions together.
