Cosmetic and personal-care packaging selection guide
Prepare a packaging brief for lotions, creams, oils, fragrances and other personal-care products without assuming compatibility from appearance alone.
Cosmetic packaging combines product protection, dispensing, appearance and repeated consumer use. The formulation may contact the bottle or pouch, liner, gasket, pump valve, dip tube and decoration. Compatibility therefore has to cover the complete dispensing system and the intended storage period.
Formulation information for packaging review
- Product type, viscosity and any suspended particles.
- Oils, solvents, alcohol, fragrance or active ingredients relevant to compatibility.
- Fill temperature, contact time and storage range.
- Light or air sensitivity and required barrier.
- Target dose, spray pattern or evacuation performance.
- Expected use orientation, travel and leak resistance.

Decoration and label durability
Oils, alcohol, water, abrasion and bathroom conditions can affect labels, inks, varnishes and direct decoration. Test the final artwork construction on the actual pack after filling and handling. Clear labels and full-body decoration may also change the complete-pack recyclability assessment.
Filling and capping
Provide bottle stability, neck finish, closure drawings and the proposed application method. Viscous or stringing products may require nozzle and cutoff trials; foaming or air-sensitive products may require different filling conditions. Record torque, press force or closure seating against an agreed specification rather than a generic setting.
Dispensing consistency and pack evacuation
For pumps and sprays, define prime strokes, dose or spray acceptance, orientation, residual product and the number of consumer-use cycles to be checked. A closure that dispenses correctly when new may behave differently after storage, repeated actuation or product drying around the outlet. Test representative filled packs after the intended conditioning period, not only empty components at the start of development.
Control cosmetic appearance as a specification
Record colour, gloss, transparency, decoration position, scuff tolerance and permitted moulding variation using approved samples or measurable criteria. This separates genuine pack defects from normal variation and gives suppliers a clear reference when a bottle, label, varnish or closure source changes.
